Consumption Report
Mechanics of a 20 year old
Mechanics of a 20 year old is an info graphic exercise showing 28 days in the life of a 20 year old. The graphics were used to describe the day to day activities, and consumption of my life, a 20 year old student. The design is a mix of typography and clean vector graphics depicting mechanical devices and designs that showcase the amount of consumption for each type of activity. The mechanics are depicted in order, each spread is linked to the next one, creating a system. Each mechanical part is relative to a derivative activity done by my body.
The links between spreads are part of the overall mechanism, carrying energy or some other substance over to be used or further processed. Black and white was used to have contrast and create a clean look, in addition to using tints of black to show a differentiation between items. The use of varying sizes of type adds a creative differentiation between spreads and visual aspects.

When I first started on this escapade into the graphic arts, I was slightly more interested in making things look ‘cool’ as opposed to having something truly clever or conceptual. This ended quickly as I was exposed to good design and not the usually generic stuff that gets passed around by the majority of the populous. I have always enjoyed ideas that make your brain click, that give you that all-important eureka moment when you understand what a designer is showing you.
The whole trick to design is inspiration, this I feel can come from anywhere, but I break inspiration up into three possible groups. The first and arguably most important is research just through reading about a company or project a creative idea can take root. The second comes from other people’s design and work, which could be totally unrelated but lead you in a great direction. The last comes from your atmosphere; the smallest object can provide the greatest inspiration.
